#### Sunday
**At SCJJA we give you the option to train jiu-jitsu all 7 days a week!**
Although we have no scheduled classes on Sundays, any member who has achieved the rank of purple belt has access to the gym to run a BJJ Class, an MMA class, or use the weights room.
This means that often Sunday is the busiest day of the week, with groups of between 2 and 10 people coming and going all day. No other martial arts
or BJJ gym in the Sutherland Shire offers this!
We're so confident in our Beginner's Programme ...
## 100% Money Back Guarantee!

## The Southern Cross Jiu-Jitsu Association
Affiliated Schools
###### [Boxing Works, Sydney NSW](https://www.boxingworks.com.au/)
Are you looking for a new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu association to affiliate with?
Rodney and the team at Southern Cross are open to accepting new clubs to our association.
Here is what we can offer you:
#### Jiu-Jitsu Coaching
- A legitimate pathway of an IBJJF registered 4th degree black belt, with a proven lineage
- Track record of legitimate gradings and high standards
- Keep your own club name and logo
- Run your school your way … what works for us in Cronulla may not work for you in your area
- No forced purchasing of merchandise
- No forced seminars
- Help with teaching via a tried and tested foundation curriculum
#### Business Coaching
Access to [Arnold Gym Manager](https://www.gymdatabase.co/) \- a custom written martial arts management system that tracks enrollments,
payments (including direct debit billing), and communication via email and push notifications.
And this is just part of the main thing that we can do for you that most other associations can’t
\- actually coach you in running your business.
A little known fact about Rodney, outside his own club, is that he only teaches 3 classes a week,
and that’s because he wants to train and stay reasonably fit. Most instructors owning their own
school are either broke or giving their life to their business … and often both!
Rodney actually works as a computer programmer for 40 hours a week - he’s learned how to systemise his business so it works without him!
If you’re interested in learning more, please [Contact Us](https://scjja.com/Home/Contact) today.

If you’re looking to buy a black belt …
## forget it ... join someone else!
… Rodney NEVER has ... and NEVER will ... sell a belt!

Big thank you to the guys who came down early this morning to put the mat back together. The new lights are a much needed addition, and the wider downpipes should prevent another flood!

@scjj\_academy
E um detalhe interessante é que Coach Rodney é da equipe Nova União do Rio de Jiu Jitsu 🥋❤️.

Accepting the invitation and taking on the responsibility of being an assistant coach for Jiu Jitsu class has been an honor and a great opportunity to learn more about this martial art.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (as it is called) is more popular among children than judo and due to this Antonio has dedicated himself more to Jiu Jitsu and he is really enjoying it.
Thank you very much Sensei Rodney
@scjj\_academy
An interesting detail is that coach Rodney is from the Nova União do Rio Jiu Jitsu team 🥋❤️.

During his recent visit to #Japan, our head instructor Rodney was able to take his family to visit #Kodokan dojo, the spiritual heart of Judo.
Along with seeing the statue of Jigoro Kano, and the main tatame, they visited the museum where photos were not allowed to be taken.

At SCJJA we have a proven track record of taking kids who need self confidence and turning them into champions (Rodney being the first), and are already building the next generation !

Students at SCJJA will hear Rodney talk about @vitorshaolin as being his main coach from purple to black whist they were both in #Rio .
Please read below to find out more ...
\-\-\-----------
Globalization Era (1972 - 2007): Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro proved himself to be one of the most talented competitors of his generation. This Nova União standout earned his Black Belt in just four years. While at Black Belt, he won three consecutive World Jiu-Jitsu titles (1999, 2000 and 2001) and competed in ADCC twice (placing 3rd in 2003). Shaolin also fought in numerous MMA organizations, where he accumulated a professional record of 20 - 5. He received his nickname as he used to sit in the lotus flower posture before BJJ class. His teammates, poking fun at him, said he looked like a Shaolin monk.

BJJ legend Robson Moura @robinhomoura. The Nova União Black Belt would dominate the World Championships at the lighter weights, winning gold on five separate occasions. Additionally, he won the CBJJO World Cup, the Brazilian National Championship and was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame.
He was part of a feared crew of late 1990's NU competitors that also included: @vshaolin, @leosantosjj, @jroquejj , @bjpenn, @gustavodantasbjj and @renatoverissimobjj.
Today, Robinho lives in Florida and runs his successful association of over forty academies.

Reminder that our Head Coach Rodney will be doing what he does best (when not in front of a PC) today from 5:10pm when he returns to helping bullied kids become warriors.
At SCJJA we have a proven track record of taking kids who need self confidence and turning them into champions (Rodney being the first), and are already building the next generation !
If you know any children who could benefit from jiu-jitsu classes, please bring them in for a free trial class.

Applies in jiu-jitsu too ... it's not who is best, it's who's left after a decade.
#DontGiveUp
Even if all things are equal, and you have the same education, opportunity, financial books as your rivals; even if the economic climate is bad for you and all your competitors; even if no one is making much money and every one of your peers is talking about jumping ship and going to another industry; even in this scenario, where there is no extra margin or secret way to riches being exploited by any of you, this is the rule for 2023...
The winner is always the one who doesn't give up.

# Join Our Kids Team!

## Kids & Teens Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes
Our head coach commenced jiu-jitsu as an 11 year old who was being bullied for a speech impediment. If you ask him he will talk about being low in
confidence and how jiu-jitsu has taken him from being too shy to lead a small group in silent prayer to now being a highly polished public speaker.
As a result of his own transformation he now wants give every child he can the same confidence.
Our kids classes are divided into two groups - **kids** and **teens.** These are just guidelines however, as depending on the age, weight and
length of time training, your child may be suited to one class over the other.
$100 Active Kids Vouchers Accepted [](https://sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids)
#### Kids Classes - 10 to "12-ish" Years Old
##### Monday & Thursday From 5:10pm
##### 50 Minute Classes
Due to the complexity of BJJ, and available mat space, we feel it's right to start kids from 10 years old.
At this age, the kids have the mental capacity to concentrate for the 50 minute class, and learn the moves safely.
It also ensures that most of the kids are rougly the same size (again, allowing for a safer class) and the older ones
aren't held back due to kids who are too young or small.
In this class, the coaches try to keep the class fun with a few games, and also focus on the core basics of jiu-jitsu,
showing only a limited number of submissions which we feel is suitable for this age group.

For more information on our kids' classes, please see these FAQs:
[Why do you only run kids classes twice a week, and none at all in the school holidays?](https://scjja.com/FAQs/faq_why_so_few_kids_classes)
[Why do you only accept kids over 10 years old?](https://scjja.com/FAQs/faq_why_limit_kids_to_10yo)
#### Teens Classes - Kids over 12 \| High School
##### Monday, Wednesday & Thursday at 6pm, Plus Saturday Mornings
##### 1 Hour Classes
There is no hard and fast rule as to when your child(ren) should progress from the kids class to the teens, and often it can be a transition
where they do both for a short period and see how they go.
We have dedicated teens only classes on Mondays & Thursdays.
Plus on on Wednesday they should be at the judo class wth senseis Steve & Jim (both school teachers).
They should also be at the Saturday morning classes as much as possible.
Finally ... during school holidays, they're welcome to also train mornings and lunch-times.

# Açaí Wholesaler
Authentic Brazilian Superfood
## Açaí For Sale

When Rodney first went to Brazil in 1998, he watched as the local jiu-jitsu guys went from training to nearest juice bar. Upon arrival, they each ordered a bowl
of this purple coloured icr-cream. He naturally felt compelled to ask what it was, and then to try some too. He was immediately hooked.
This purple ice-cream was of course not ice-cream at all. But rather a fruit from the amazon. Berries, picked from a tree and then blended and frozen. In a hot,
tropical city like Rio de Janeiro, it is a very popular snack. Especially after a hard training session.
At the time, there was no way to enjoy this magical fruit anywhere other than in Brazil. However, times have changed and you'll now see many cafes and fruit juice bars
here in the Sutherland Shire selling it!
**But Beware!**
When you order an acai smoothie or bowl at most places - for example in Cronulla mall - chances are you're getting a measly 200 grams of acai, blended with
other fruits (or even tap water) ... and then getting charged $10 or $15!!!
DO NOT DO THIS - Come down to SCJJA and try the Real, Pure Açaí!
Rodney has tried a few different acai importers and **Tropical Brazil** are easily the closest to the real thing
that he fell in love with in Rio back in 1998!
You can read more abou their products on their website here: [https://tropicalbrazil.com.au/](https://tropicalbrazil.com.au/)
and then come down and try it for yourself.
It is much better value than buying it at a cafe - the only problem you might have is fitting it in your freezer! 😆

## Rugby Training Classes

# Grappling for Rugby
Suitable for both Rugby Codes
## Grappling for Rugby / League

You've probaby seen articles in various newspapers regarding jiu-jitsu coaches helping out various NRL teams (if not click [here](https://www.google.com.au/search?q=jiu-jitsu+coach+for+nrl+team&oq=jiu-jitsu+coach+for+nrl+team&aqs=chrome..69i57.6480j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)).
Our head coach Rodney used to train extensively with John Donehue (someone he still calls the best technical coach in Australia), and still trains
regularly under Larry Papadopoulos - two coaches who work a lot with professional NRL and rugby/AFL teams. So he has good inside knowledge of what
happens in these sesssions.
The advantage that Rodney has over a lot of other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coaches in Australia, is that like a lot of local boys, he played rugby for many years.
Starting of as a slow scrum-half he finished his final season at hooker. He also watches a lot of rugby and even dragged his wife Lisa to two tests as they
went through Paris and London on their honeymoon!
**So he understands the game!**

#### Biography
Born in Cronulla, he was just 11 years old when he commenced
training at Southern Cross Goshin Ju-Jitsu Ryu with [Sensei Gordon Griffiths](https://www.asjj.com.au/home/black-belt-register), in the
Sydney suburb of Sylvania Heights.
As a child, Rodney was very eager to train. Normally being
the first one at class, and the last one to leave. For several years, Gordon would
take Rodney and a few of the other students, interstate for competitions and interclub
training weekends. It was at one of these training
weekends that Rodney first met [Larry Papadopoulos](https://www.boxingworks.com.au/classes/brazilian-jiu-jitsu/). At that time Larry was just starting
to get into professional competition in Japan – Pancrase.
In 1996, and at 18 years of age, Rodney had completed
school and commenced studying IT in the Sydney CBD. As Larry’s gym was adjacent to
the college, Rodney would leave class early to go and train.
To assist with his fights in Pancrase, Larry had assembled a strong group of around
20 guys who would train regularly. One of these was a Brazilian named [Eduardo Duarte](https://www.facebook.com/dudu.duarte).
In Australia to study English, Eduardo was a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu,
a martial art which at that time was just starting to become popular throughout
the world.
After around a year of training, Eduardo invited Rodney to travel with him to Rio
de Janeiro for a holiday. Although the trip was primarily a holiday, incorporating
Carnival, there were one or two training sessions mixed in.
Whilst there, in February of 1998, Rodney met Eduardo’s long time coach, Assed.
At that time Assed was a 4th degree black belt in jiu-jitsu (now 6
th
degree) and a 2nd degree black belt in Judo, and was still training
with his coach, the master [Osvaldo Alves](https://www.bjjheroes.com/bjj-fighters/osvaldo-alves-facts-and-bio) . At the end of the trip, and on the final
night of training, he presented Rodney with his blue belt. This now gave Rodney
the coincidental rank of blue belt in both systems of jiu-jitsu (traditional and
Brazilian).
The trip only increased Rodney’s thirst for knowledge. Upon returning home he attended
a seminar that Larry had organised in Sydney with (then brown belt) [John Donehue](https://johndonehuemma.com.au/john-donehue-bio/).
Although Australian, John was living in Los Angeles and training with the Machados
and also [Gene Lebell](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_LeBell).
The following year, Rodney again travelled back to Brazil, this time with the intention
of competing at the world championships. Upon arrival, it was discovered that Osvaldo
had alienated a lot of his students. As a result, Assed told Eduardo & Rodney
to train at an academy that was next to Assed’s house and owned by an old friend.
That academy was [Nova União](http://novauniao.com/) and Assed’s friend was [André Pederneiras.](https://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Andre-Pederneiras-227)
In early 2000 Eduardo permanently moved back to Rio. Rodney then took the opportunity
to quit his profession and spend the next six years that followed, dividing his
time between his home in Sydney and his best mate's home in Rio.
Also around this time, John Donehue (now with black belts in BJJ, Judo and Gene
Lebell's grappling) returned from the United States and opened up a school in Melbourne.
Rodney recognised John’s level to be above anyone else in Australia, and made the
effort to train with him as often as possible. Several times Rodney flew to Melbourne
to train just 3 or 4 hours with John on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon (and
often ended up sleeping on the mats in the gym).
In total, between 1998 and 2006, Rodney made six trips to Rio, staying anywhere
from 3 weeks to 10 months at a time, and countless trips to Melbourne to train with
John. He was in Rio when Nova União won the award for best team at the 2001 World
Championships (after coming 3rd in 1999 and 2nd in 2000).
He was there too when BJ Penn made history by becoming the first non-Brazilian to
win a true world championship.
2001 also saw Rodney make his debut in Professional Shooto (Mixed Martial Arts)
in Tokyo, as a late replacement for an injured teammate.
Whilst in Rio in 2004, 2005 and 2006, Rodney spent the afternoons training with
Andre’s Vale Tudo team. There would often be up to 15 black belts on the mat training,
and Rodney was proud to be one of [Vitor Shaolin’s](https://www.shaolinbjj.com/martial-arts-club.shtml) main training partners for his
fights at this time.
On the night of Wednesday the 16th of November 2005 there was TV camera
crew at Andre’s gym interviewing fighters for fights in upcoming events. After interviewing
the fighters and then André himself, they watched and recorded as André Pederneiras
presented Rodney with his black belt.
In 2006 Rodney returned back to Australia after spending the majority of the
previous two years in Rio. Although he decided to revive his old profession as a
computer programmer (as it was the quickest way to repay a mountain of debt), Rodney
also decided to open his full-time centre. He chose the name Southern Cross
Jiu-Jitsu Academy as it reflected the original school name where he started, and
where he was teaching part-time up at Sylvania Heights (Gordon started Southern Cross
Goshin Ju-Jitsu Ryu in 1965 in a scout hall in Gymea).
These days Rodney is one of the rare people who is able to combine a full-time
desk job, with running a full-time training centre. Even more remarkabe is that
Rodney's biggest competition successes (victories in the 2006 and 2008 Pan Pacs
and 2009 ADCC Trials) have all come whilst he has [spent the majority of the week\\
in front of a computer](https://www.rodneyellis.com.au/), and with his only training partners being his own
students.

### Question: Is jiu-jitsu effective in a real world situation?
#### Answered by Head Coach Rodney
If you’ve watched a modern jiu-jitsu competition then you might be wondering what its application to a real world scenario would be.
**Ie, is someone with a high belt in jiu-jitsu (for example purple belt or above), going to win a street fight?**
The answer to that question is “it depends”.
The main “it depends” is how you train.
For example, today there are a lot of jiu-jitsu schools which are “no-gi only”. This means they do not train with the traditional judogi (gi or kimono). Their training uniform consists purely of tights/shorts and a rashguard or t-shirt. And in this type of training grabbing the clothing is forbidden as it is not as durable as the gi.
**I can almost guarantee that these types of schools focus 100% on “sport jiu-jitsu”.**
From my many years of working as a bouncer in Sydney’s CBD, I would estimate in almost all cases (without exaggeration) of altercations, it involved one person grabbing the clothing of another person in order to prevent them from getting away and to land some strikes. And I’ll bet my pound to your peanut that the person who trains both gi and no-gi will have a better chance of survival in this situation.
The second “it depends” comes down to the style of jiu-jitsu. If your school only focuses on sports jiu-jitsu then you will probably spend a lot of time playing a “sport guard” vs a “fight guard”.
You can see an earlier blog post of mine for more information, and images, here:
[https://www.tumblr.com/scjja-cronulla/749588402689687552/the-guard-old-school-v-new-school](https://www.tumblr.com/scjja-cronulla/749588402689687552/the-guard-old-school-v-new-school).
Next, it can go too far the other way. Where all the techniques practised are “self defence situations” which are done without any resistance. You see this a lot with more “traditional” style schools, or aikido schools, where the attacker complies with whatever position the defender does. This is essentially a form of kata that has next to no application in the real world. Defenders of this type of training argue that it would be too dangerous to train this with resistance as the techniques are too deadly. The problem is that training without resistance doesn’t really work when it comes time to use the positions in the real world.
Finally, it depends on if your jiu-jitsu instructor actually teaches positions which are relevant to a real fight. Again, a lot of modern day jiu-jitsu clubs focus too much on sport and just totally neglect this part of the art. And because their students, who focus just on sport keep winning competitions, then they eventually get graded to black belt without ever having worn a gi, nor been taught the whole art.
If your goal with jiu-jitsu is just to win no-gi jiu-jitsu competitions, then SCJJA is not the right academy for you.
At SCJJA you will never be graded to even blue belt if you do not know the fundamentals of training with grabbing clothing. Plus we also cycle through training with strikes and also the most common and useful self defence situations, with resistance.
In 2009 I won the Australasian ADCC trials at just 77kg. So I know a lot about competing in no-gi competitions. **However I got into jiu-jitsu because I was being bullied at school.** Then in my 20s I was the head bouncer at the Slip Inn / Chinese Laundry, where I obviously had my fair share of scraps, and never once faced charges from the police or any patron. In fact, I never threw a single punch in almost a decade of working the clubs.
**Jiu-jitsu as I see it and teach it, is a martial art, and SCJJA I want to give you the best opportunity to defend yourself in a street situation first. Competitions are always a secondary consideration for me.**

### What are your Membership Types?
#### Do you offer different kinds of memberships, and if so, what are they?
If you’re looking at the main websites of our competitors, you’ll notice that they don’t post their prices, let alone talk about their different membership offerings.
The reason for this is simple - they want you to come in, and be guided through a pressured sales funnel where you end up signing a 2 year contract, for roughly $60 per week.
And if you don’t believe that, please go ahead and ring them.
**At Southern Cross Jiu-Jitsu Academy however, we believe in transparency.**
On our [pricing page](https://scjja.com/Home/Prices) you can see not just the different types of memberships, but also the prices!
To keep it short and simple - we offer two types of memberships:
1. By the class
2. By time
**Paying by the class** is best suited for people who may have trained jiu-jitsu elsewhere, and want to give us a try. Or for people popping in from out of town.
We offer you the choice to purchase one class, or purchase 10 classes up front for a discount. These 10 Class Passes, as we call them, have a 12 month expiry and no refunds.
For people who live locally, and want to give jiu-jitsu a real crack, you’re much better off **paying by time**. By paying for classes by the week or month, then you can attend an unlimited number of classes in that period.
When paying by time, there are also two options:
1. Pre Paid
2. Direct Debit
With a **pre-paid membership**, you need to purchase your time up front.
Most people who take this option pay for one month, or three months, but we do have a couple of members who pay for 12 months all in one hit.
The advantage of this payment type is that it’s just a one off and you can take time off between periods.
**The downside is that like most businesses, we do adjust our prices with inflation and so what you pay one month might be different to the next.**
To guard against membership fees going up, and actually make them go down … most members at SCJJA pay via direct debit.
As per our pricing page, we offer one rate for the first 12 months, and then **we drop it by roughly 20% from the 13th month**!
And if you never quit, then this fee will **never increase**!
Click [here to check out our pricing page](https://scjja.com/Home/Prices) again, see the Reward Rate, and when you call other schools, be sure to ask why their prices are so much higher!
And if you’re curious **why our prices are so much lower** … then please read this FAQ here: [https://scjja.com/FAQs/faq\_why\_so\_expensive](https://scjja.com/FAQs/faq_why_so_expensive)

### Question: What kind of people do you have at Southern Cross Jiu-Jitsu Academy?
#### Answered by Head Coach Rodney
When someone walks into SCJJA for the first time to learn more about the gym, one question they often ask is around what mix of people we have training here. This is common if they've trained elsewhere before and been injured.
the best way I can answer this is to borrow from the All Blacks. You can google it if you like ... just search for the
**"No Dickheads Policy"**
Like all BJJ clubs that have been around for a while, we've had our fair share of dickheads come in. But when they do, one of two things happens - they quit or they get an attitude adjustment and stick around.
This is the main reason that we don't advertise our "Mixed Martial Arts" classes. We'd probaby get a few more members if we did, but the average person (there are always exceptions of course), who signs up for MMA classes without learning jiu-jitsu first, essentially just wants to punch on. This is not the kind of person we want at our club.
If you take us up on our 7 day trial (where there is no contract or anything like that), you'll discover that our club is comprised of men and women from all walks of life. We have several tradies who work in the building and construction industry, and just as many IT workers too (of which I am one). Plus a couple of doctors and firemen and school teachers.
The main thing is though that we're all helping each other get better.
The egotistical dickhead can go somewhere else.

I’ve had the fortune of training at many different “gyms” over the years. And I put the word gyms in inverted commas because a jiu-jitsu gym can be either just a big mat on the floor or a schmick facility with different rooms for weights, spin bikes etc …
In fact, the gym where I got my purple, brown and black belts in Rio, was nothing more than a large room on the 2nd storey of an old decrepit building.
The modern fad in jiu-jitsu facilities, is to copy what the Mendes Brothers have done with their “ [Art of Jiu-Jitsu”](https://artofjiujitsu.com/pages/academy) academy in San Diego. Not too long ago, they came up with the idea to create an academy where everything is white. All white walls, mats and everyone has to wear a white gi. The idea is to look as clean and prestigious as possible.
My favourite gym that I trained at over the years was Boxing Works in the late 1990s to mid 2000s. This gym was located on Castlereagh street in Sydney and was where I trained and taught during this time. When you walked in to this gym, the smell of sweat hit you immediately. You knew that fighters were bred in this place. It was clean, and had different rooms, but it was like the gyms shown in the old Rocky movies. You weren’t there for an Instagram selfie (in fact, this was when we all had Nokia brick phones, so the selfie wasn’t really a thing). We were there to train.
That’s why when you walk into Southern Cross you don’t see the walls sparkle.
Don’t get me wrong, we mop the mats and do other cleaning daily. But … we want the focus to be on training, not just looking the part.
Our gyms colours - blue, white and black, come from the local colours of Cronulla. The surf club and the Rugby League team both use a combination of these three colours.
Plus, our location is one that we strived to get. Being in the commercial district of Caringbah, it means that after 4pm we have ample street parking. We don’t need air-conditioning, as in the warm summer months we open our roller door and let the nice breeze come in off Woolooware Bay.
For those who need to travel somewhere after training, we do have shower facilities available, but it’s not our priority as 99% of the time our members are back home within 20 minutes of a class finishing. Our focus is on teaching you jiu-jitsu with a safe, but still “fighting mentality”.
I look forward to welcoming you onto our big blue mat!

### Question: Why is a grappling art like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) better than a striking art?
#### Answered by Head Coach Rodney
When evaluating martial arts for effectiveness and safety, grappling-based systems like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) stand out notably compared to striking-based arts such as karate, especially when it comes to practicing techniques under full resistance.
**One of the foremost advantages of grappling arts is their ability to be practiced at full intensity with minimal risk of injury.** In BJJ, practitioners engage in live sparring sessions where they can apply techniques against a fully resisting opponent without the threat of strikes to the head or body. This allows for a realistic and thorough exploration of techniques, ensuring they are effective in real-world scenarios while maintaining a safer training environment.
In striking arts like karate, practicing techniques at full power often involves high-impact strikes that can lead to significant injuries, including concussions and other trauma. The nature of full-contact striking necessitates careful control to avoid injury, which can limit the effectiveness of training and hinder the ability to gauge true technique efficacy. In contrast, grappling arts allow practitioners to go 100% in their resistance and technique application without the same risk of head injuries or severe trauma. This means that grapplers can fully test and refine their skills in a controlled, yet realistic setting, gaining a deeper understanding of their effectiveness under genuine resistance.
The ability to train at full resistance also fosters a greater level of skill development in grappling arts. When engaging with a resisting opponent, BJJ practitioners must adapt and improve their techniques in real-time, enhancing their problem-solving abilities and technical proficiency. This form of training helps practitioners develop a higher level of confidence in their skills and ensures that their techniques are practical and effective under pressure. Conversely, in striking arts, the risk of injury often necessitates more controlled practice, which can limit the opportunity to fully test and refine striking techniques.
Moreover, the safer nature of grappling-based training reduces the risk of long-term injuries and allows practitioners to train more consistently and intensely. With less focus on avoiding impact to the head and body, grapplers can dedicate more time to perfecting their techniques and improving their overall skill set. This consistent, high-quality training contributes to better long-term progress and a more comprehensive mastery of the martial art.
In summary, the ability to train grappling techniques at full resistance without the associated risk of head injuries provides a significant advantage over striking-based arts like karate. This aspect of grappling arts allows for more effective skill development, greater safety, and a more realistic understanding of technique efficacy. For individuals seeking a martial art that balances intensity with safety, BJJ offers an ideal solution for comprehensive training and practical self-defense skills.

### Question: What's the difference between the Gracie Schools and SCJJA?
#### Answered by Head Coach Rodney
If you’re comparing jiu-jitsu to other martial arts, then you should start with this question [(click to read FAQ)](https://scjja.com/faqs/faq_why_bjj)
**But if you’ve decided that jiu-jitsu is the style for you .. and you’re now looking for a jiu-jitsu school, what do you do if there are several close by and you’re wondering which one? What’s the difference?**
Well, if you haven’t read the answer to the question [“Is jiu-jitsu effective in a real world situation?”](https://scjja.com/faqs/faq_is_bjj_effective_in_self_defence) then that would be the next article to read, as some schools focus more on sport, and others on self defence and actual fighting.
Finally, if those articles don’t help, then chances are it comes down to an academy like ours, SCJJA, or one of the Gracie schools.
**So what’s the difference between SCJJA and the Gracie Schools in our area?**
Well … it’s kinda like McDonald’s and Burger King, or Coke and Pepsi. We’re essentially teaching the same thing, but just with some slight tweaks. And which one is preferable is no doubt an individual choice.
To begin with, you have to understand just how big the Gracie Family is. The main characters to learn are [Carlos Senior](https://scjja.com/FAQs/=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Gracie),
and [Helio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A9lio_Gracie), who between them had over 30 children!
Carlos’ oldest son was [Carlson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlson_Gracie). Carlson was the family champion for a while (until like all of us father time defeated him).
He is credited with grading over 100 black belts, one of whom is [Andre Pederneiras](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9_Pederneiras) . Dede, as he is known, is the man who graded me to black belt.
Carlos had another son he named [Carlos Junior](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Gracie_Jr.). And Carlinhos (portuguese for Carlos Junior) created the [Gracie Barra](https://graciebarra.com.au/) academy, and franchises.
Over on the Helio side, one of his sons is [Royler Gracie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royler_Gracie). Royler is essentially the head of what was known as [Gracie Humaita](https://www.graciehumaita.com/), who now legally own the name “Gracie Jiu-Jitsu”.
Confused? Well, there are plenty of YouTube videos and other articles to explain this in more detail. But at least from this summary, you can get a feel for how we came to be.
###### So … moving on … what the differences in our clubs/teams today?
**The first one is that we are not a franchise.**
Nobody tells me how to run my club. I can choose my team colours, club name etc …
The Gracie schools on the other hand are franchises. Everything from their club name, to their uniforms is standardised worldwide.
I’m not saying this is good or bad, it depends on your perspective.
From this then flows into the culture of the gym. I strive to make my club the same as Dede's was when I was training there from the 1990s through to 2009:
- We do not bow, for us a simple hand shake is our form of respect.
- I am ok with you wearing any colour or brand of gi that you wish. The Gracie clubs (as far as I am aware) force you to buy their uniforms.
- I do not force you to call me Professor (teacher) or Master. I am ok with you calling me Rodney or Hodge (nickname), just as I refer to Andre as Dede.
- No belt testing, nor grading fees. For a grading I’ll just walk over in the middle of class and change your belt .. the same way I got mine.
And finally, this is probably the biggest one for someone who is tentative at starting...
And I’m not 100% sure what the Gracie Schools’ policies are, because they’re not transparent … but **we do not have 2 year contracts.**
All our prices are publicly visible all of the time.
**Plus, as you train longer with us, the cheaper your fees get! There are no black belt clubs, nor special seminar weekends or any of that.**
**After 12 months of continual membership and you’re paying a max of $150 per month!**
And that includes the weights room and other benefits.

### Question to Rodney: Why did you start training martial arts?
There are many reasons that got me started in martial arts. I think I was 12 years old when I officially started at Sylvania Heights Youth Centre with Gordon, but the desire was borne well before that.
I guess the inner flame was just a desire to be good at sport. Dad was good at cricket and rugby league, and so he put me in them (actually soccer first because mum wouldn’t let me play footy). In cricket I was a good wicket keeper, but in the football codes I sucked. I never grew until I was 17 (more on that later), and as any parent of a kids’ footy team knows - size and strength is a huge advantage.
Moving into high school, I switched to rugby union, but as much as I tried, I was never an A-Grade player.
Another reason was the plethora of martial arts movies and TV that was on in the late 80s and early 90s. In 1988 (when I was 10), there was this movie you might have heard of called Bloodsport. And JCVD followed this up the next year with Kickboxer. And in 1990 we had the first Ninja Turtles movie …. So you can see where I am going with this. Plus, the fact that I was already a huge James Bond fan, and there are martial arts scenes in those films, just gave me aspiration of doing likewise.
And then the final, and probably most driving reason that not only got me started, but more importantly kept me going, was the bullying I suffered.
There are 26 letters in the English language, and the one letter I struggled with was R. So when a teacher in school would ask my name, in front of the whole class, I would reply with “Wodney”. You can imagine the reaction of the class.
It also didn’t help that I went to Newington College, a school which in the early 1990s had a lot of good rugby players, all of whom towered over me. I remember for year 7 or year 8, they had all 200 boys lined up from shortest to tallest, and there were only a handful shorter than me. This in itself wouldn’t have been too bad, except for the aforementioned lisp, and my smart-arsed wit.
So yeah, to summarise, it was a combination of wanting to do a sport I was good at, the inspiration of all the martial arts movies, and getting picked on at school. Mould all that together and you have a reason to start, and a reason to keep going, despite the setbacks.
## Limit Kids to 10+

### Why do you only accept kids over 10 years old?
#### Other gyms take kids from 4 or 6, why don't you?
We'll often have parents ring up and ask about a trial for their son or daughter, and then the first question we ask back is, "how old are they?".
This is because, unlike other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu businesses in the Sutherland Shire, we do not accept children under the age of 10.
###### Here is why:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art celebrated for its focus on technique, discipline, and self-defense. While it offers a wealth of benefits, it may not be the best choice for children under the age of 10. The developmental needs of young children, both physical and psychological, suggest that alternative activities might be more appropriate during these formative years. Parents considering enrolling their young children in BJJ should carefully weigh its demands and challenges against their child’s maturity and readiness.
###### Physical Development and Injury Risks
BJJ involves grappling, joint locks, and submissions, which demand a level of physical control that young children often lack. At this age, children's bones, joints, and muscles are still developing, making them more susceptible to injuries if techniques are not executed or supervised properly. While many BJJ programs for kids focus on safety, even carefully controlled environments can pose risks when young children attempt advanced moves without fully understanding their limits. Parents should consider whether their child is physically prepared to handle the rigors of this sport.
###### Cognitive and Emotional Maturity
Children under 10 are still developing critical cognitive and emotional skills, including focus, patience, and impulse control. BJJ requires participants to follow complex instructions, stay calm under pressure, and respect their training partners—skills that may be challenging for younger kids to consistently exhibit. Without these foundational traits, children may struggle to fully engage in the discipline of BJJ or could inadvertently harm themselves or others.
###### Understanding Competition and Pressure
Many BJJ schools emphasize competitive training, which might not align with the needs of younger children. Competitions, even in friendly formats, can be overwhelming for kids who are not yet equipped to handle the stress of winning and losing gracefully. This can lead to frustration, burnout, or a diminished sense of self-confidence if they do not perform as expected. Introducing children to martial arts through less intensive disciplines, such as karate or judo, might be a gentler approach to building confidence and skill.
###### Alternative Activities for Young Children
For children under 10, activities that focus on coordination, teamwork, and foundational motor skills may be more suitable. Dance, gymnastics, or non-contact martial arts programs provide similar benefits without the complexities and physical demands of BJJ. These alternatives allow children to build strength, discipline, and social skills while reducing the risks associated with grappling-based sports. When they are older and better equipped physically and emotionally, they can transition to BJJ with greater success.
###### Why do other BJJ businesses run classes for younger kids?
To put it bluntly - **money!**
At the end of the day, BJJ clubs are businesses. And if a business can have 10 or 20 kids on their mat, with their parents paying around $200 per month, then it is an easy form of revenue.
However, if you watch the classes, often there is very little jiu-jitsu taught and most of the class is made up of playing games, or other activities that you can find elsewhere for a fraction of the cost.
As mentioned on [another FAQ](https://scjja.com/FAQs/faq_why_so_expensive), coach Rodney works as an IT Professional too, and this is his hobby business. He'd much rather be coding than supervising 6 year olds to playing tug-o-war!

### Question: Why do you only run kids classes twice a week, and none at all in the school holidays?
#### Answered by Head Coach Rodney
When comparing SCJJA to the other main martial arts clubs in the Sutherland Shire, you’ll notice that we do only run kids BJJ classes twice weekly, and we do not train during the holidays. There are few reasons for this but the main one is this.
Over the 30 years I’ve been involved in martial arts, I’ve seen many “kid champions”. These are kids who have been enrolled at an early age and train 5 days a week, and win competitions etc … but by the time they’ve hit puberty then they’re totally sick of jiu-jitsu and would much rather be doing something else.
It’s the same with any sport. Imagine training soccer, or any of the footy codes, or cricket etc … 5 days a week for a decade. It eventually gets too much. Swimmers are possibly the best example. Not many Olympian swimmers are still going into their 20s.
So I like to train the kids here in a way that is non pressured. When I started as a 12yo, I only trained once a week. And then when I hit 17 and left school to study IT in town, I upped it to 5 times a week. But if it was 5 times a week when I was in school I doubt I would’ve stayed. And the funny thing is, the kids who beat me in competitions when I was a teenager … I wiped the floor with those who were still training when we met as competitors as adults.
The other reason why we don’t offer more kids classes, is because of the reasons I outlined in this post - https://scjja.com/FAQs/faq\_why\_so\_expensive
For the majority of other martial arts schools, the kids' classes are their cash cows. They charge ~$50 per week, plus sell uniforms etc … plus there are more belts for kids and so they charge for belt grading tests and all sorts of things.
And sadly, the immoral part of this, is that for the young kids especially, they’re not really learning jiu-jitsu. It’s just gymnastics and game playing wearing a jiu-jitsu gi. I feel most parents would get better value for money putting their 5 year olds into gymnastics at the local PCYC or YMCA than a boutique jiu-jitsu school. Heck, that’s why I did with my boys!
To summarise … I want jiu-jitsu to be something people do over 3 times a week for a decade or more. Not something they do 5 times a week for 1 or 2 years and then get burnt out.

### Question: Why is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so expensive?
#### Answered by Head Coach Rodney
If you’ve been researching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools, you would probably have noticed that almost all of them do not list their prices.
At SCJJA we do, and here is the link: [https://www.scjja.com/Home/Prices](https://scjja.com/Home/Prices)
When you eventually do get another school to tell you their price, it’s normally around the $60 per week mark, direct debit, on a 2 year contract. Plus they will probably enforce a strict uniform policy forcing you to purchase gear at a ridiculous markup.
One of the main reasons for the high cost is real estate. A large Jiu-jitsu academy requires a large mat, and therefore, high rent. Plus the mats themselves are not cheap either - the entirety of our mats (inc walls and cover) cost around $20k.
So given that the average cost of training at a full-time facility is $60 per week, why are we able to off training for far less?
Let me say right from the outset, it is not to do with our quality of instructors, nor location. My credentials are well documented and worth pointing out again that for a short period of time, I held national titles in both gi and no-gi at the highest level (adult black belt). And our location is sublime with the fresh breeze coming in off Woolooware bay, and unlike our competitors, ample parking on Resolution Drive (all the factories close around 4pm).
So why? Why do I charge so much less?
Well, there are a couple of reasons, but I must stress the first one is that this is my passion. Jiu-Jitsu has done so much for me, taking me from a bullied kid to the head bouncer of one of Merivale’s top nightclubs. This means that I want it to be affordable to everyone. In fact, there are actually a few of our members who cannot afford our low prices and so we offer contra deals for them too. But essentially, this is the main reason - I want people to not have money as the reason they can’t train.
Sticking with when I was younger, my first instructor was Gordon Griffiths and he taught me for years at Sylvania Heights Youth Centre. During the day he worked as a carpenter and only taught jiu-jitsu for the passion of it. He was paid almost nothing from the youth centre, basically enough to cover his fuel. And for this bore out great relationships with his students. And as students, we knew he didn’t do it for the money, but the love, and I guess I’ve taken that to heart.
It was through Gordon I met Larry Papadopoulos who is one of the pioneers of Australian MMA. When I left school and was studying IT in the CBD he became my main coach, and still is to this day. I remember one competition circa 2010. It was a hot day in February at Sutherland basketball court. Larry was with me all day, sweating it out, looking after me and coaching me to ensure I got the best result possible. He didn’t this because I paid him (I didn’t). He did it because he had invested years of knowledge into me, and wanted to see me win.
During my first trip to Rio de Janeiro in 1998, I trained at the academy of the late master Osvaldo Alves. He charged R$20 per class. My next trip I met Andre Pederneiras and he charged me R$60 per month for unlimited classes! And both of these men - Osvaldo and Andre - were introduced to me by Assed Haddad, who was the coach of my best friend Eduardo Duarte. And guess how much Assed charged me for private tuition … $0! Again, I remained under their tutelage for my entire time in Rio, earning my black belt from Andre (as Assed was living in the USA at the time).
I guess what I’m trying to say from these stories - my relationships with Gordon, Larry, Assed and Andre - is that these are worth more to me than money. It’s like a Daniel-son to Mr Myagi thing.
Another main factor of being able to charge less, is because I still work in the IT Industry as a DBA / Developer (you can read more about this part of my career here -- www.rodneyellis.com.au). By not relying on members of SCJJA to pay the bills for my family & I, I am not beholden to the members to tell me how to run the classes, nor give out soft grades to keep them. This doesn’t mean I don’t listen to feedback, or anything like that, but it means that I am able to teach the complete art of jiu-jitsu, and not just fads or things that are in style to get money.
For example MMA - we have members who fight MMA, but I don’t advertise this as I don’t want to attract people who just “want to fight”. Because I have my IT career, if I have a student with a bad attitude or is using their jiu-jitsu to harm others, then I do not need to keep them just to keep the business lights on.
I like to lead by example and so I work in a “normal job” and then teach/train jiu-jitsu as my exercise. It just so happens that I also run the business that does the exercise. However if Gordon or Larry were teaching in the Sutherland Shire (they’re currently teaching in Coffs Harbour and Kings Cross respectively), then I’d be happy just helping them teach the next generation. But alas, as they’re not, I’ve taken the torch to run with here in The Shire.
So yeah … the short version is, that I teach jiu-jitsu because of what it’s done for me. It’s not my “job”.
I want all my students to have the same relationship with me that I have with my masters, and to wear whatever gi brand or colour they want!

### Will I get more hurt training BJJ?
#### Or moreso, compared to other martial arts ...
**Well no, because ...**
**The Controlled Nature of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)**
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) offers a unique and arguably safer approach to martial arts training compared to striking arts. The emphasis on grappling and submissions allows practitioners to train at full intensity while maintaining control over when to stop. The "tap-out" system ensures that participants can yield the moment they feel a submission taking effect, greatly reducing the likelihood of severe injuries. While joint sprains, muscle strains, and occasional ligament injuries are common in BJJ, these can often be mitigated by effective communication and mutual respect between training partners. Moreover, because BJJ lacks striking, the risk of concussions and brain injuries is negligible compared to striking disciplines.
**High Risk of Concussions in Striking Martial Arts**
In striking arts like karate or kickboxing, the inherent nature of training involves high-impact strikes to the body and head, making concussions a significant concern. Even with protective gear, the repetitive impact from punches and kicks can lead to short- and long-term brain trauma. Sparring sessions, often conducted with varying levels of intensity, carry the risk of knockouts, which are not only dangerous in the moment but can also have cumulative effects over time. Unlike BJJ, where a practitioner can tap out when overwhelmed, a participant in striking arts may have no choice but to endure until they are hurt, knocked out, or the instructor intervenes.
**Injury Severity and Prevention in BJJ**
Injuries in BJJ tend to occur more gradually and are often the result of overuse, such as joint strain from repetitive grips or submissions. Acute injuries can occur, but they are usually avoidable with proper technique and a willingness to tap early when caught in a submission. Training with partners who prioritize safety further minimizes risks. This controlled environment fosters a culture of longevity, allowing practitioners to train consistently without the same level of wear and tear experienced in striking arts.
**Unpredictability of Striking Injuries**
The risk of injury in striking martial arts is not as easily controlled. Even during light sparring, accidents happen, and a mistimed punch or kick can cause significant damage. Broken noses, fractured ribs, and sprained wrists or ankles are common, but the most alarming danger is the frequency of head trauma. Unlike BJJ, where participants can disengage before serious injury, striking arts often push practitioners into scenarios where the only way to stop is by taking or delivering a decisive blow. This increases not only the physical toll but also the mental stress associated with training.
**Long-Term Safety and Recovery**
Recovery in BJJ is often more manageable, as injuries are usually related to joints and tendons, which heal with proper care and physical therapy. In contrast, striking martial arts often involve injuries that leave lasting marks or require prolonged rest, such as concussions or broken bones. The long-term implications of repeated head trauma in striking sports, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), are well-documented and present a serious concern for practitioners. BJJ’s focus on technical proficiency and controlled intensity offers a safer alternative for those looking to enjoy martial arts over the long term.
**The Philosophy of Controlled Training**
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s reliance on tapping out embodies a philosophy of safety and self-awareness that sets it apart from striking arts. Practitioners can push themselves to their limits without fear of serious injury, as the tap signals an immediate end to potentially dangerous situations. In striking arts, the nature of competition often leads to situations where participants must endure injury to continue. For those prioritizing longevity and minimizing injury risk, BJJ stands out as a martial art that allows intense training while safeguarding both the body and mind.
